Digital Photography Review

Photography is both an art and a science. Photography is used to preserve memories of favorite times, to capture special moments, to tell stories, to send messages, and as a source of entertainment. Photography is probably the most influential medium of the modern era.

Digital imaging uses an electronic image sensor to record the image as a set of electronic data rather than as chemical changes on film. Digital imaging is rapidly replacing film photography in consumer and professional markets. Digital photography is a wonderful innovation for this “instant results” generation, and it should be incorporated into the educational process because of its power to quickly create a visual impression and promote lasting learning experiences.

Photographers like Robert Frank, Garry Winogrand, Lee Friedlander and Joel Meyerowitz have forced a redefinition of the phrase that has many new implications. Photographers control the camera and lens to "expose" the light recording material (such as film) to the required amount of light to form a "latent image" (on film) or "raw file" (in digital cameras) which, after appropriate processing, is converted to a usable image. Unlike a painter, who is in direct contact with his subject and his canvas, a photographer is separated from his subject by the camera and from his "canvas" by computers and printers today and by darkroom equipment previously. In the 20th century, street photographers have provided an exemplary and detailed record of street culture in Europe and North America, and elsewhere to a somewhat lesser extent. You don't need board certification or a licence to be a photographer. As a photographer you need to learn how to differentiate yourself from all the other turkeys out there. The scientific aspects of photography can be both overwhelming and fascinating, so much so that for some photographers photography comes to be just that: a scientific process that they attempt to master over their lifetime.

Technology

Today's technology has made picture editing relatively easy for even the novice photographer. Our children are growing up in a technology-driven age of immediacy. It can also be pointed out that it was certainly possible, if labor intensive, to create photo compositions using pre-digital technology (as a case in point, the great compositions of Jerry Uelsmann come to mind). For this reason, the abundance and diversity of night photography has been closely tied to the advance of photographic technology. With digital technology, careers in photography are becoming more lucrative, more interesting and more in demand.

Photography is not just about pointing and pressing a button; it's a decision-making process. Photography is also just plain fun, and it's a wonderful foundation for community-based projects. Photography is an invaluable tool for recording many subjects of cultural significance, from single artifacts to complicated events.
